Preserve is a natural treasure of the Texas Hill Country, possessing unique and majestic
beauty and ecological diversity. Located adjacent to the Pedernales River in southwestern
Travis County about 40 miles from downtown Austin, this 30-acre gem is managed by the
non-profit Westcave Preserve Corporation and offers an array of natural science and
interdisciplinary educational programs for children and adults from Austin and surrounding
communities.
Two distinct ecosystems meet on the
Preserve, forming a unique opportunity for students of nature and an unexpected experience
for visitors exploring the Hill Country. The Preserve's grasslands are scattered with
wildflower meadows, ash junipers, oaks and cactus bordering a sheltered limestone canyon
punctuated with rare plants and cypress trees. The highlight of the site is its 40-foot
waterfall backed by caves, tumbling over fern-covered travertine columns into an emerald
pool.
Hours
Weekdays: Reservation only
Week-end: Public tours are offered at 10:00 a.m., noon, 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. The gate is
open to incoming visitors from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Rates
Public and weekday tour rates are $4 per adult, $2 per child under 17, or $10 per family.
Directions
Westcave Preserve is located in southwest Travis County, approximately 45 minutes from
downtown Austin.
From Austin: Travel west on
Highway 71 to the village of Bee Caves. Turn left at Ranch Road 3238 locally known as
Hamilton Pool Road. Travel 14 ½ miles on Hamilton Pool Road to the Pedernales River.
Westcave Preserve is the first gate on your right after crossing the river.
From Areas West of Westcave
Preserve: Take Highway 281 to the village of Round Mountain. In Round Mountain, turn
east on Ranch Road 962. Travel 17 miles on Ranch Road 962. The gate to Westcave Preserve
will be on your left. (Note: To remain on Ranch Road 962, veer left at the y-intersection
after Cypress Creek).
Free tour admission is offered to
Westcave Preserve members. Teachers and chaperones are admitted free for organized weekday
tours.
